Questions about Small Groups

What is a small group?

A small group is a gathering of around 3-12 people who meet weekly to share, study and support one another. A trained member leads each group. An average meeting lasts for about an hour and a half to two hours. Refreshments are typically offered during this time.

Are small groups important?

At Water of Life, we believe that life transformation happens in the context of relationships. You were not meant to live life or pursue your faith alone. Small groups are the best way to learn about our faith, develop purposeful relationships, discover our gifts and serve together. You might have read that the first thing Jesus did when he started his ministry was to launch a small group (he called them his disciples). We think that’s a good example to follow.

When and where do small groups meet?

Small groups meet once a week in members’ homes, workplaces or online. We have groups that meet all over the Inland Empire. In fact, there’s probably one meeting in your neighborhood this week!

How long do small groups last?

Typically, our groups last through the traditional school year. They take a break in the summer and also during the holidays in December.

What is the required commitment to join a small group?

The only requirement is that you’re open to meeting with the group every week if the group is a good fit for you. Once members get into a group, they usually stay until the end of the school year. Many of our groups have been together for 5 years or more.

What will we study?

Most of the small group studies are based on the previous weekend’s sermon message. These sermon-based small groups go through a curriculum written specifically by volunteers and staff. Hearing the message during the weekend and then talking about it during the week is a great way to increase learning and application in your own life. Also, we have some groups that study other approved curriculums.

What does it cost to be in a small group?

Few things in life are free and small groups are no exception! The cost of your small group is commitment. As with all things, what you get out of a group is dependent on what you put in. If you invest in the study time and relationships, you’ll reap tremendous benefits from your group. Additionally, some groups will occasionally do a book study, in which case you’ll probably want to purchase the materials.

Do small groups offer childcare?

Some of our groups provide childcare and would welcome you and your children. When you search the website at wolgroups.com, make sure you check the box that says “children are welcome.” Often, a collection is taken up to share the costs of childcare among group members.

How do I get into a small group?

We would suggest you start your search by praying. A small group is an amazing blessing, and you want to make sure you invite God into your process.

When you’re ready to start looking for a group, head over to www.WOLgroups.com. Click on “find a group,” and check out the groups we have available. If you see a group that interests you, click on it, then fill out the contact form on the right. Remember that depending on the season, our number of groups can fluctuate greatly. For example, in the summertime, most of our groups take a break. Please check your email for a response from the leader.

You’ll also see a Communications card in your church bulletin every week. You can fill out that card and drop it in an offering box, and we’ll contact you via email within 1-2 business days.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call the church, and we will gladly assist you. Keep in mind that it might take two or three groups before you find the perfect fit, but don’t worry, you’ll find it!

Can I start my own small group?

The short answer is “yes!” Hit the back button on your browser, and click on the “start a group” button. Fill out the form, and we’ll get in contact with you within 1-2 business days. We will provide the curriculum and the training you’ll need to start your own group successfully.
