Joysprings Ministries
Charles and Rose Wanyama
Partnering in Kibera Slums, Nairobi, Kenya
Joysprings Outreach Ministry is a church and school ministry that serves the residents of the Kibera Slum, located in Nairobi, Kenya. Kibera Slum is the largest slum on the continent of Africa, with over 2 million people living in settlements within this slum, most of whom lack basic human needs.
We, Pastors Charles and Rose Okoth Wanyama, are the Founders and Directors of this ministry. We have a long and amazing testimony of how God raised us from being a house help and a watchman to being vessels of God ́s gospel and love in a big way. Joysprings Educational Centre provides affordable primary education to the children of Kibera and also meets their spiritual needs through different activities at Joysprings church.
We have two children, Mercy and Jessy, who are very close to our ministry and are actively playing different amazing roles. Mercy studied for Education and helps with all the management and administrative duties of the schools. Jessy studied IT and does all the photography, videography and technical work for the ministry.
Joysprings first started as a school in the year 2000 with only 4 kids, and found a semi-permanent location with well-wishers in the year 2005. The number continued to grow, and we started to employ a few extra personnel to assist with teaching the children.
Our major focus is to reach out to children and the neighboring community with the love of Jesus Christ through education, spiritual activities and churches in different regions in Kenya. We train and equip church and children’s leaders within and without our churches.
Hundreds of children have been reached out through education, children’s rallies, children’s fellowships, and even Sunday school. Our vision is defined through the word FETCH, which basically stands for Feeding, Educating, Training, Clothing and Healthcare.
We fetch for children from the community from underprivileged families, we offer them primary school education and a feeding program which greatly supplements those who rarely have sufficient meals at home. We also offer training in skills like computer, arts, tailoring, jewelry making, soap making, public speaking and many other co-curriculum activities.
We also source for secondhand clothes from well-wishers and distribute them to children who deserve them. Sometimes we buy school uniforms and shoes for children who are unable to purchase a pair. Finally, we partner with doctors and nurses in providing medical camp services whenever possible. We also partner with local clinics in providing emergency care for children who fall ill during their time at school.
At the moment, Joysprings has 5 active churches and 1 new school in the western part of Kenya. There is also 1 church within Nairobi which is the capital city of Kenya. The church in Nairobi is the one serving the local community around the
Kibera slum and the school children too. This year (2024) Joysprings committed to assisting 90 children from less fortunate families who are completely unable to pay for anything.
These 90 kids include those that had stayed for a long time without being able to secure a chance in any other school. We really give God the glory for how far we have come, and we greatly appreciate the partnership that Water of life Community Church has given us through out all the years. We have lots of life impacting testimonies of many children and adults, and we are so glad that by God ́s grace we are able to do this.
We are living a life full of faith and hope! We believe that the Holy spirit is guiding us well and we continue to totally depend on Him.
1. We are trusting God that the Leaders we equip every year through leadership conferences will be agents of transformation within their communities. And that we shall all represent Jesus in our everyday lives.
2. We are trusting God for consistent provision of food and school resources for the 90 children we have committed to supporting for the next 6 plus years.
3. We are also trusting God that He will keep us strong and healthy throughout our mission life.
4. Most of the children and adults we are serving, especially in the western part of Kenya, are coming from very distanced places. We are therefore trusting God for ministry vehicles that can help with transportation.
5. We run a Sunday School teacher training, Leadership conference and a children ́s rally every year, but sometimes we miss because of unavailability of sufficient funds. We trust God for consistency of funds to support these programs every year. The last training we did, we were able to reach out to almost 40 Sunday school teachers, over 100 church leaders and over 300 children!
